AI share of voice is a comparative visibility metric: it describes how often a brand appears relative to competing brands across a defined set of AI answers. It is useful for market context, but only when the sample and counting rules are visible.
Define the denominator first
A share-of-voice percentage without a denominator is decoration. Before calculating anything, specify:
- the prompts included in the panel;
- the AI providers included;
- the number of runs or observations;
- the competitor set;
- how multiple brands in one answer are counted.
Changing any of those inputs can change the result even when no provider behavior changes.
A simple mention-based formula
One straightforward approach is to count brand appearances across all eligible prompt-provider observations and compare those counts across the defined competitor set.
If Brand A appears in 30 eligible observations, Brand B in 20 and Brand C in 10, a simple appearance-share calculation gives Brand A 50% of the three-brand appearance total. That number describes this sample only. It is not revenue share, market share or total consumer awareness.
Other methodologies can weight recommendations, answer position or repeated mentions. If you use weights, document them. Complexity does not automatically create accuracy.
The AI Share of Voice tracking page explains how MonitorMyGEO treats the metric as an evidence-backed comparison rather than a standalone oracle.
Decide whether an answer can count multiple brands
Many AI answers recommend several options. A binary prompt-level method can give each appearing brand one count for that answer. In that model, the total brand counts can exceed the number of answers because multiple brands may appear in one response.
An alternative is to allocate one unit across all brands in the answer. Both approaches can be valid for different questions, but mixing them between reporting periods makes trends meaningless.
Keep provider breakdowns visible
An aggregate share of voice can hide significant differences. A brand may be frequently mentioned in Perplexity and rarely mentioned in ChatGPT. Always preserve provider-level results so the aggregate can be decomposed.
This is one reason the broader AI visibility measurement framework recommends retaining prompt-level evidence under every summary metric.
Choose competitors deliberately
The competitor set should reflect the market question being measured. If a brand competes with ten companies but the report includes only two favorable comparisons, the percentage may be mathematically correct and strategically misleading.
Allow the observed answers to surface unexpected competitors as well. AI products may group brands differently from your internal positioning deck, and those differences can be useful research signals.
Track changes with a fixed panel
Share of voice becomes more useful when the same prompt and competitor definitions are repeated. A later increase can show that the brand appeared in more of the monitored answer set relative to the comparison group.
Do not infer cause from the metric alone. Review which prompts changed, which providers changed and whether the competitor set stayed constant.
Pair the percentage with examples
Executives like one number. Analysts need the answers underneath it. Report both. A useful dashboard can show the aggregate share, provider breakdown, top gains and losses, and direct links to the observations responsible for the change.
This makes anomalies easier to catch. A brand name with multiple meanings, a parsing error or one unusually broad answer should not silently reshape the headline metric.
What AI share of voice does not mean
It does not measure:
- total market share;
- sales or revenue share;
- consumer brand awareness;
- every AI conversation occurring globally;
- a guaranteed future recommendation probability.
It is a sample-based visibility comparison. Used with that constraint, it is informative. Presented as something grander, it becomes numerology wearing a dashboard.
