Tracking ChatGPT citations means preserving the source evidence returned with a searched answer and connecting each source to the prompt, provider, answer and date that produced it. A flat list of domains without that context loses most of its analytical value.
Capture the source with the observation
For each monitored answer, store the prompt text, timestamp, returned answer and source URLs when available. Normalize the source domain for aggregation, but keep the original URL so a reviewer can inspect the actual page.
Do not assume every ChatGPT answer will return citations. Citation availability can depend on the experience and individual response. Record “no citation evidence returned” as a distinct state rather than fabricating a zero score.
Separate brand mentions from citations
A brand can be mentioned while a different website is cited. A brand-owned page can be cited without the final answer explicitly recommending the brand. These are separate observations.
This is why AI Citation Tracking sits beside brand-monitoring metrics rather than replacing them.
Normalize domains carefully
For aggregation, normalize obvious URL variations such as www.example.com and example.com. Decide how to treat subdomains before analysis. Documentation hosted on docs.example.com may deserve separate reporting from a marketing site depending on the question.
Also distinguish source URLs from redirectors or tracking wrappers when possible. The goal is to identify the actual information source, not merely the link format shown in an interface.
Look for recurrence, not one-off prestige
One citation from a famous publication can be interesting, but recurring sources across multiple related prompts often tell you more about the evidence environment around a category.
Group citations by prompt theme and provider. A domain that appears repeatedly for technical questions may never appear for purchase comparisons, and that difference can guide research.
Compare source changes over time
On later runs, ask which sources persisted, appeared or disappeared. Keep the prompt panel stable so changes are interpretable.
A new source does not prove a specific SEO or PR action caused the change. It tells you that the observed evidence set changed. Investigate timing and other signals before claiming attribution.
Verify crawler eligibility separately
OpenAI documents OAI-SearchBot as the crawler associated with search discovery and recommends that publishers who want search eligibility allow it. Verify robots.txt and infrastructure access, but remember that eligibility does not guarantee a citation.

Build a useful citation report
A practical report should include:
- citation frequency by domain;
- prompts where each domain appeared;
- brand-owned versus third-party sources;
- new and lost sources versus the prior comparable run;
- provider-level differences;
- direct links to the underlying observation.
Avoid assigning an unexplained “authority score” to a domain solely because it was cited. The citation tells you the source appeared in that observed answer. Quality assessment requires separate criteria.
Use citations as research inputs
Recurring third-party sources can reveal where your market's public evidence lives. Review those sources to understand the facts, comparisons and terminology they contain. This can inform documentation, PR, partnerships and content research.
Do not copy the source or manufacture links in an attempt to imitate the signal. The objective is to improve your own evidence and understand the market information environment.
Keep the language precise
Say “this domain was cited in 6 of our 40 monitored ChatGPT search answers” rather than “ChatGPT trusts this domain.” The first statement is measurable. The second assigns a mental state to software, a habit humans remain mysteriously committed to.
