There is no public “ChatGPT brand ranking formula” that marketers can reproduce. OpenAI says ChatGPT search ranking uses multiple factors intended to surface relevant, reliable information and does not guarantee placement. That means responsible analysis should focus on observable evidence rather than pretending to reverse-engineer a secret score.
Separate retrieval from generation
When ChatGPT uses web search, at least two broad questions matter: what information becomes available to the system, and how the final answer uses that information. A page may be technically eligible without being retrieved for a specific query. A retrieved source may inform an answer without producing a brand recommendation.
This is why a recommendation should not be reduced to “we added schema and ChatGPT picked us.” Several steps sit between public web content and the generated wording.
Relevance to the user's question matters
A brand has a stronger reason to appear when its public information directly addresses the user's need. Clear product descriptions, use cases, eligibility criteria, limitations and comparisons help both people and retrieval systems understand fit.
That does not mean stuffing pages with every possible prompt. Google's generative AI guidance explicitly warns against scaled query-variation content and encourages useful, non-commodity information. The same content discipline is sensible beyond Google because it produces better evidence for any system reading the public web.
Reliable evidence matters more than unsupported claims
If a product page says “best in the world” without supporting information, there is little for a reader or retrieval system to verify. Concrete capabilities, methodology, documentation, first-hand data and credible third-party corroboration create stronger evidence.
Third-party sources can also influence how a brand is represented. Monitoring citation patterns helps identify publications, directories or documentation that recur in observed answers. It still does not prove those sources caused the recommendation.
Crawl access is an eligibility control
OpenAI recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot if a publisher wants content eligible for ChatGPT search discovery. The site and CDN also need to allow crawler traffic. This is a technical prerequisite, not an optimization shortcut.

Brand clarity reduces ambiguity
Use consistent brand naming, clear company and product pages, accurate contact/about information and sensible internal links. If the same product is described differently across multiple pages, automated systems and people both have more reconciliation work to do.
Structured data can reinforce explicit visible facts, but it should match the page rather than invent information only for machines.
Recommendation patterns should be measured, not assumed
The useful question for a brand team is not “What is the secret factor?” It is “For which buyer questions do we repeatedly appear, beside which competitors, with which sources?”
Create a stable monitoring panel, record the recommendation context and repeat it. The ChatGPT Brand Monitoring workflow is built for that evidence loop.
What you can improve
Teams can improve technical accessibility, clarity, depth, evidence, first-hand information and external corroboration. They can also choose better monitoring prompts and eliminate measurement errors.
What they cannot legitimately promise is a guaranteed ChatGPT recommendation. The provider controls its systems, and output can vary.
A better diagnostic sequence
When a competitor is recommended and you are not:
- verify your site is technically accessible;
- inspect how directly your content answers the buyer question;
- compare concrete evidence and product clarity;
- inspect sources returned in the answer;
- review credible third-party coverage;
- repeat the observation before treating it as persistent.
That sequence produces actionable hypotheses without fictional certainty, an underrated feature in marketing analytics.
