Choose GEO prompts by mapping the questions buyers ask at discovery, problem diagnosis and product selection. Prefer a small panel you can repeat over time to a long list of keyword variations. Include unbranded questions for organic visibility and keep branded questions in a separate accuracy and recall panel.
Start with a buyer decision map
Write down the decision a potential buyer is making. Category questions reveal which tools or providers an answer names. Problem questions reveal the remedies and sources an answer uses. Selection questions reveal alternatives, pricing concerns and buyer fit. Use customer interviews, sales notes and on-site search when available; inferred prompts are useful starting hypotheses, not proof of search volume.
A concise starting panel could include: “Which tools can track AI citations?”, “Why does my brand appear less often than competitors in AI answers?”, and “How can an agency report AI visibility to clients?” These are examples of different intent types, not claims that any one prompt has measured demand.
Separate organic and branded panels
An unbranded prompt must not contain your product or company name. It tests whether the brand appears without being supplied in the question. Branded prompts, such as “What does MonitorMyGEO measure?”, test whether a provider describes the company accurately. Combining the two inflates discovery metrics.
Assign every prompt a stable ID, text, intent, priority and target page. A useful priority scale can weight high-value purchase and problem prompts more heavily than peripheral research questions. Record the weighting before collecting outcomes.
Keep the panel repeatable
Save exact wording, provider surface, model where available, market, language, collection date and repetition count. Changes to any of these can reduce comparability. Run more than one observation where budget allows, because generated answers can vary. A failed response is missing data, not a brand absence.
Review the panel at a documented cadence. Add or retire prompts when buyer language or product scope changes, and version the panel instead of silently rewriting historical results. Maintain a link from each prompt to the most relevant page or product explanation; one substantial page can answer several closely related prompts.
Use results to guide content
Inspect answer text, recommendations, citation URLs and competing brands. A missing mention may indicate unclear public positioning, absent third-party evidence, a poor prompt fit or a provider difference. It does not automatically mean a website defect. Use AI visibility monitoring to collect observations, competitor tracking for comparative evidence, and the methodology to interpret the results.
Limits
A selected prompt panel is a sample. It does not represent all user questions or guarantee how a consumer interface will answer. Provider API results may differ from ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity consumer experiences.
