An AI visibility audit should answer a simple question: Can AI search and assistant systems reliably discover, understand and use accurate information about this brand for the questions customers actually ask?
The checklist below covers 25 practical checks across technical eligibility, content, entity clarity, evidence and measurement.
It does not promise a ChatGPT ranking. No responsible checklist can. It gives you a disciplined way to find avoidable blockers and build a baseline for GEO work.
Technical discovery: checks 1-7
Before running these checks, our AI crawler comparison explains why search-oriented and model-development crawlers should not be treated as one policy bucket.\n\n### 1. Important pages return usable HTTP responses
Critical pages should load normally for unauthenticated visitors and crawlers. Fix broken URLs, redirect loops and server errors before debating AI optimization.
2. Important pages are indexable
Check for accidental noindex directives and other indexing controls.
Google's noindex documentation explains an important detail: the crawler needs access to the page to read its noindex directive. Blocking crawl and trying to manage indexing are different controls.
3. robots.txt reflects your actual AI-search policy\n\nFor configuration examples and common failure modes, see our robots.txt guide for AI search.
Decide which crawlers you want to allow based on your publishing policy.
OpenAI says sites that want to be included in ChatGPT search summaries and snippets should not block OAI-SearchBot.
Perplexity recommends allowing PerplexityBot for appearance in its search results.
Do not blindly copy a robots file from another company. Their data-use policy may be different from yours.
4. Google Search eligibility is healthy
Google says pages that can appear as supporting links in AI Overviews and AI Mode first need normal Search indexing and snippet eligibility in its AI features guidance.
Check Search Console for indexing problems on the pages that matter.
5. Bing crawl and indexing are healthy
Microsoft's Webmaster Guidelines say Bing and Copilot grounding share core crawl, index and ranking foundations.
Frequently asked questions
What is an AI visibility audit?
It is a structured review of technical eligibility, content usefulness, brand/entity clarity, evidence and observed visibility across relevant AI prompts and platforms.
Should OAI-SearchBot be allowed?
If you want content eligible for ChatGPT search summaries and snippets, OpenAI's publisher guidance says not to block OAI-SearchBot.
Should PerplexityBot be allowed?
If you want to appear in Perplexity search results, Perplexity recommends allowing PerplexityBot according to its crawler documentation.
Does llms.txt replace robots.txt or indexing?
No. Google's 2026 generative AI guidance says unnecessary AI-specific text files such as llms.txt can be ignored for Google Search.
What should be fixed first after an audit?
Prioritize material crawl/index blockers, inaccurate product facts, high-intent content gaps, weak evidence and the absence of a repeatable visibility benchmark.

Verify the site in Bing Webmaster Tools, submit useful sitemaps and inspect important URLs.
6. Canonical URLs are consistent
Each important page should send a clear canonical signal.
Do not publish multiple near-identical URLs and then ask retrieval systems to guess which one represents the current truth.
7. Important pages are internally linked
A page should not exist only because someone knows its URL.
Link important guides, product pages, methodology pages, research and documentation through a logical site structure.
Content usefulness: checks 8-14
8. The page answers its core question early
A definition page should define the term. A pricing page should explain pricing. A comparison page should state the comparison.
Do not make the reader cross a desert of brand copy before reaching the fact.
9. Headings describe real subtopics
Use headings that help a person scan the page and understand what each section answers.
Clear headings also make long pages easier for retrieval and extraction systems to segment conceptually.
10. Product and service facts are explicit
State:
what the product does
who it is for
major use cases
supported markets or platforms where relevant
current pricing model where public
important limitations
Ambiguity is not premium branding.
11. Content adds information beyond summaries
Google's people-first content guidance asks whether content includes original information, research or analysis and whether it offers substantial value beyond simply rewriting other sources.
Audit your top pages for genuinely original value.
12. Comparisons use declared criteria
If you compare products, explain the dimensions: price, workflow, integrations, methodology, audience or another relevant criterion.
Avoid invented "best" claims without a basis.
13. Important pages are factually current
Review claims that can expire:
prices
product availability
model names
regulatory information
supported integrations
feature lists
statistics
Update the facts and the fact-check date together. Do not change dates merely to simulate freshness.
14. Thin duplicate pages are consolidated
Ten pages that say essentially the same thing can dilute clarity.
Combine overlapping material into stronger pages where that improves user experience and preserves the right canonical intent.
Entity and trust: checks 15-19
15. The brand identity is consistent
Check the official brand name, company name, product names and category descriptions across:
home page
about page
pricing
product pages
legal pages
documentation
social profiles
major directories
Small inconsistencies can become large when third-party systems repeat them.
16. Authorship or organizational responsibility is clear
For research, analysis and advice, identify who produced or reviewed the content.
Google explicitly encourages accurate authorship information in its people-first guidance.
Do not add fictional expert profiles. The internet has enough ghosts.
17. Claims have sources
Use primary evidence for factual claims where possible.
If a statement depends on a research paper, regulation, platform policy or public dataset, link to it.
Use supported schema where it accurately describes what is visible on the page. Do not mark up content that does not exist, and do not treat schema as an AI citation guarantee.
AI visibility measurement: checks 20-25
20. You have a defined prompt benchmark
Create a stable set of prompts mapped to real customer intents.
Include:
category discovery
problem solving
comparisons
alternatives
high-intent recommendations
branded questions
21. Prompts cover all commercially relevant platforms
Measure the platforms customers are likely to use.
For MonitorMyGEO's current benchmark, that means ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity.
Do not infer one platform's visibility from another.
22. Mentions and recommendations are separate
Track whether the brand was merely named versus actively recommended.
A long-list mention should not receive the same weight as a first-choice recommendation.
23. Citations and source URLs are stored
Keep the domains and URLs used as evidence.
Microsoft's AI Performance report demonstrates why this matters: citation activity is a distinct dataset from rankings and clicks.
24. Competitor share of voice is measured
Record which competitors appear for the same prompt set.
Break the data down by intent and platform so you can see where the competitive gap actually exists.
25. Important observations are repeated
Do not call one answer a trend.
Repeat selected prompts and use controlled paraphrases when you are testing whether a result is stable.
A 2026 critical GEO survey highlights variability across runs and systems and recommends repeated measurements and controls for stronger evidence.
Your audit scorecard
After completing the 25 checks, classify each item:
Pass: no material issue found
Warning: partially complete or uncertain
Fail: a clear blocker or gap
Not applicable: genuinely irrelevant to the site
Then prioritize by business impact.
A noindex on a core product page matters more than a missing optional schema field. An outdated pricing claim matters more than a cosmetic heading rewrite.
The score is less important than the order of operations.
The first five fixes to prioritize
If an audit finds many issues, start here:
Remove accidental crawl and index blockers.
Correct inconsistent or outdated product facts.
Improve the pages that answer high-intent customer questions.
Add evidence, methodology and primary sources to important claims.
Establish a recurring AI visibility benchmark so future changes can be measured.
This sequence creates a clean foundation before you spend time on speculative tactics.
What not to treat as a shortcut
llms.txt
Google's 2026 generative AI optimization guide specifically says publishers can ignore unnecessary AI text files such as llms.txt for Google Search.
You may still choose to publish machine-readable resources for other reasons, but they do not replace a working website.
Keyword stuffing
Repeating "best AI visibility platform" until a paragraph becomes unreadable does not create expertise.
Use the words customers use where they naturally describe the topic.
Fake citations
Do not create fake research references, fake statistics or fake media mentions.
Evidence works because it can be verified.
Schema spam
Structured data should reflect visible, truthful content. It is not a loophole for claims that the page cannot support.
How this checklist connects to GEO
The checks map to the same pipeline described in the complete GEO guide:
Access → Index → Retrieve → Use as evidence → Cite → Mention / Recommend
Technical checks protect the first stages.
Content, entity and evidence checks improve the usefulness and clarity of the information.
Measurement checks tell you whether that work is changing observed outcomes.
That is a far more defensible GEO process than making a change and asking an assistant once whether it likes you now.
Turn the audit into an operating rhythm
Run the technical checklist after major platform or website changes.
Review high-value content on a regular editorial cadence.
Track a stable prompt benchmark weekly or monthly depending on your market.
Run deeper repeated measurements when you are evaluating a major content or positioning change.
Document what changed before each benchmark so you can form hypotheses without pretending correlation proves causation.
